Understanding the skin layers helps in comprehending how treatments can penetrate and affect the skin.

Updated: Aug 27

The human skin is composed of three main layers, each with distinct functions:

Epidermis: The outermost layer of the skin, which acts as a protective barrier against environmental elements. It consists of multiple sub-layers:

  • Stratum Corneum: The outermost sublayer, made of dead, flattened skin cells continuously shed.

  • Stratum Lucidum: A thin, clear layer found only in the thick skin of the palms and soles.

  • Stratum Granulosum: Where keratinocytes begin to die and form a waterproof barrier.

  • Stratum Spinosum: Provides strength and flexibility to the skin.

  • Stratum Basale: The deepest sub-layer, responsible for producing new skin cells.

Dermis: The middle layer of the skin, located beneath the epidermis, is much thicker. It contains:

  • Papillary Layer: The upper part of the dermis, containing thin collagen fibers, blood vessels, and sensory neurons.

  • Reticular Layer: The lower part of the dermis, is made up of thick collagen bundles that provide structural strength and elasticity. This layer also contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and nerves.

Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Tissue): The innermost layer of the skin, consisting of fat and connective tissue that insulates the body, absorbs shocks, and stores energy.

Loss of Facial Fat with Age As we age, we lose facial fat, affecting both superficial and deep fat compartments. Here’s a brief overview of why and how this happens:

  • Why Do We Lose Facial Fat?

Natural Aging: Decreased fat production and hormonal changes, particularly lower estrogen and testosterone levels, reduce facial fat.

Genetics: Inherited traits influence how much and how quickly facial fat is lost.

Metabolism: A slower metabolic rate impacts fat distribution and volume.

  • How Does It Happen?

Fat Redistribution: Fat shifts from the face to other body areas like the abdomen.

Volume Loss: Reduction in facial fat pads leads to hollowing and sagging.

Structural Changes: Loss of support in facial tissues results in wrinkles and folds.
